organization, so be sure to include separate paragraphs with separate topics. Make the essay as long as it needs to be to get your point across with detailed, specific examples as support. I will be looking for:
A clear thesis expressing your answer to the question you have chosen to respond to.
Specific, detailed examples from your experiences or anything you have read or seen to illustrate and/or support your argument.
Analysis. Be sure to explain to your reader how your examples prove your point and/or how your examples illuminate the issue you are discussing.
Essay structure, including an introduction and a conclusion to ease your reader into and out of your essay and including body paragraphs, each on a separate topic with a topic sentence, evidence, and analysis.
Straightforward, precise prose. (For this essay, please feel free to use personal pronouns such as “I” and “me,” but avoid slang and profanity, and please make sure your writing is clear and direct.)
What do you think is the most important issue facing your generation? Why? In what way? What in your experiences or anything that you have read or seen illustrates this?
The Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines “altruism” as “unselfish regard for or devotion to the welfare of others” (34). However, the German philosopher Immanuel Kant believed that there was no such thing as true altruism or true generosity, because when one person does something selfless for another person, they are really doing it for selfish reasons—i.e. because it makes them feel good to do so. Do you agree with Kant? What, in your opinion, is true altruism or true generosity? Where in your experiences or in anything that you have read or seen have you seen either one?
In his book Why We Lie: The Evolutionary Roots of Deception and the Unconscious Mind, David Livingstone Smith states that “scientific research on deception is almost always focused on lying in the narrowest sense—literally saying things that aren’t true. But…our deceit extends far beyond verbal falsification. We lie by omission and through the subtleties of spin. We engage in many forms of non-verbal deception, too. We use makeup, hairpieces, and cosmetic surgery to disguise our true appearance; we cry crocodile tears, and flash phony ‘have a nice day’ smiles.” Do you agree with his definition of deceit? How do you define honesty and/or dishonesty? Provide examples from your experiences or anything that you have read or seen to support your definition of honesty and/or dishonesty.
What is the difference between a freedom and a right? Drawing from your experiences or anything that you have read or seen, explain the difference between these two concepts and illustrate this difference with examples.
John W. Aldridge, in “Civilization in the United States,” wrote that “we always move, it seems, through a present we do not care to experience toward some future time and place at which real life will finally begin.” Is Aldridge correct, in your experience? What is your attitude towards the present or the future? Why do you feel the way you do? What factors contribute to your view?
The grading system (A-F) has been a standard means of evaluating students in American high schools and universities for a long time, but that does not mean it is necessarily effective. In your opinion, is grading in high school or university effective? Be sure to support/illustrate your ideas with examples from your experiences or anything that you have read or seen.
