This assignment is configured as a quiz, but it’s not. It’s just the format I can use to create this assignment in Canvas. It will not be graded automatically; I have to review each assignment in order to grade it.
You can certainly use this worksheet to help gather sources for the Paper 3 rough publish. Feel free to copy and paste text from a word processing program to help you compose your publish.
You might want to read them all first before composing your responses. Research is required for this assignment as well.
Please note: We will not be submitting this for a grade!

Websites
Use Google effectively to find websites for organizations or magazines or journals (not web-based articles) that professionals in your field might look regarding their field.
You could use this link to find some sites: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Professional_associations_based_in_the_United_States (Links to an external site.).
In the space below, list 1 relevant/credible/reliable/current website that deals with your career field. It can be an organizational site and/or an online magazine, journal, etc. It should not be specific news articles nor college or university program websites.
Don’t make the mistake of listing online articles here. This part of the worksheet is looking for complete websites not articles. These could show you the distinction: an example of a complete website would be www2.ncte.org/ (Links to an external site.).
An article would be columbiachronicle.com/pulling-back-the-curtain-on-race-diversity-and-curriculum-in-college-theatre (Links to an external site.). This question is not asking for online articles.
Remember that Wikipedia, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, any college or university site about a program in the field, and any About.com site cannot be used for this worksheet nor for Paper 3.
Please include the following information for one website you discovered:
Title of website: (in italics)
URL of website:
Who runs/maintains/publishes the site?
Date of last update or copyright date:
How do you know this site is credible?
What’s the purpose of this site?
What are some trends, arguments, issues going on in the field that this site discusses?
Today’s date:
Remember that Paper 3 only allows 2 sources found on the internet (found using Google).
Library Sources: Using Beacon
As shown in the Using Beacon Download Using Beaconhandout in Canvas, you can use Beacon, a search tool offered by the Del Mar College Library, to find articles from periodicals (magazines, journals, newspapers, etc.) about a particular topic in the library’s databases. (Please note: neither this worksheet nor Paper 3 allows for ebooks.)
Here’s a helpful tip: Search through Beacon using some key terms in your field or career; you might have to try different terms or ideas since you’re just “fishing” for sources right now. Sometimes when you search for sources, you end up developing a workable topic. Or, if you know what topic you’re writing about for Paper 3, you can research that too. If you’re not sure what topic to research, try “casting a wide net” to see what you can find. Also be sure to use the “Filter by subject” limiter to help you develop topics.
Also note that you can use different terms for your field. For instance, if your career involves being a car mechanic, you might have to use terms like “automotive” or “automobile,” etc. Use different search terms if you’re not finding any sources right away. If you find an article that might be helpful for Paper 3 later, save it and/or print it and copy and paste the MLA citation for it using the CITE button. You don’t want to have to search for the article again later just to get the MLA citation. It’s a good idea to just create a working works cited page file and paste your MLA citations there as you gather sources.
In the spaces below, list the information for 3 articles from a periodical–a magazine, journal, newspaper, and/or a trade publication–found using Beacon that can be used in Paper 3. This information is what you’ll use to construct your works cited page. Remember: ebooks are not allowed.
The titles of periodicals, which are journals, magazines, newspapers, and database titles are always in italics. Every important word in the title should be capitalized. It doesn’t matter if the title isn’t formatted correctly in the library database. You have to format titles correctly.
The titles of articles are always in quotation marks. Every important word in a title is capitalized. Again, it doesn’t matter if the title isn’t formatted correctly in the library database. You have to format article titles correctly.
You must capitalize every important word in all titles; non-important words are not capitalized. The first word and the last word in titles are always capitalized. Any word after a colon in a title is capitalized. Again, it doesn’t matter if the title doesn’t have capitalized words; you have to format titles correctly.
Remember: Beacon is NOT a database. Beacon is just the name of the search tool that allows you to search through the databases. The word “Beacon” should not appear anywhere in your responses below since it is just the name of the search tool the DMC Library uses.
Use the CITE button in Beacon to get the MLA information.
