READ the following: “There is no place on Earth where human beings have lived without objects that could properly be called art. It is not surprising that those raised in Western culture – that is, in Europe and North America – would consider our artistic traditions familiar and accessible and think of everything else as ‘foreign.’ Human beings, by their very nature, are most comfortable with the familiar, and the known, and they tend to assume their own ways [deeply socialized and enculturated into them] are superior to all others. It is easy to forget that what is normal and familiar to oneself may seem ‘foreign’ to others.” DIRECTIONS – PART ONE: CHOOSE, as examples, two (2) artworks from the artwork listed. (Two examples total). You may include any of the following kinds of art, but you don’t have to do all of them: 1. Islam 2. Africa 3. India 4. China 5. Japan 6. The Americas DISCUSS the artwork and its purpose and meaning. Does it have a practical ‘utilitarian’ function or is it a pure expressive ‘art’ object? Why does it look the way it does? What was the artist’s intention? As best you can tell from the textbook reading or research on the Internet, does it represent a major stylistic change in the culture, or was it much like what came before or after it? Minimum World Count for This Essay Section: 150 DISCUSS your two examples with regard to the quote “there is no place on Earth…” listed above. What does ethnocentrism have to do with art and this exercise? Where do your artworks fit in with these ideas? What value might there be to recognizing your own ethnocentric tendencies when confronted with your examples, their cultures, and their artworks? COMPARE and CONTRAST (discuss the similarities and differences between) the two artworks. Minimum Word Count for The Second Essay Section: 75 DIRECTIONS PART TWO: After reading the chapter assignments as listed in Part One, above, MAKE UP one (1) multiple-choice test question based on any of the information about NON-WESTERN ART in any of the Non-Western Art chapters listed above. Include three false answers AND the correct answer, making it clear to everyone which answer is the correct answer. (Just imagine you are putting together the test yourself…)

LOOK AT FRIDA KAHLO’S OIL ON CANVAS, “THE TWO FRIDAS” (1939) ON PAGE 204 IN YOUR TEXTBOOK.
WRITE 500-600 WORDS about “THE TWO FRIDAS,” following the Teacher-Made hand-out, “ART CRITICISM” ( Include the 5 Steps: 1. See; 2. Perceive; 3. Ask & Answer; 4. Reflect; and 5. Know).
REMEMBER:
Art = Form + Theme+ Context + Personal Connection.
REMEMBER:
Artworks that stick with us stay in our hearts and minds because we connect with them on a personal level. They speak to us about the world, ourselves, or something we’re going through. We remember them and they change us–how we think or experience the world, inspiring us or giving us a new lens to look through.
Go through all 5 STEPS on the attached teacher-made handout on ART CRITICISM and post 600 words about the ARTWORK on page 204 “The Two Fridas” to: See; Perceive; Ask & Answer; Reflect; and Know.
Remember, every good argument has at least two components a “claim” and “evidence” to support the claim. Explain in your post/argument, why you make a specific “claim” with “evidence” (i.e., grounds to support your claim(s) from your textbook, other art books, or websites. https://youtu.be/Y3MSyNGsBWk

Neshat’s body of work extends beyond identity politics. Cultural critic Eleanor Heartney once said,
“Neshat makes art through her identities as an Iranian and as a woman, but reshapes them to speak to
larger issues of freedom, individuality, and societal oppression.”
1. Artworks’ titles often tell us a great deal about the content of an artwork. What do you think the title of Shirin Neshat’s photograph “Allegiance with wakefulness” (see attached photo) suggests the artwork is about?
2. What do you think the text’s relationship is to the feet and gun?
